I think this goes beyond an identity crisis. We’re witnessing a new form of colonialism, not the colonization of territories, but the colonization of human identity through algorithms. We’re gradually being shaped into one global identity, with the same aspirations, aesthetics, humor, and perspectives, regardless of our cultural backgrounds. Perhaps this is what makes the system so powerful: it makes us believe we’re expressing our individuality while we’re all being shaped by the same mechanisms. As Ethiopians, we should be able to participate in the global world without losing our cultural identity or our ability to think independently. The goal shouldn’t be to isolate ourselves from the world, but to understand the system well enough not to lose ourselves in it. We can be global citizens without becoming copies of one another.

The easy accessibility of everything we could’ve possibly had, physical, just reduced to one single item decreases our intentional consumption of media. If in the past we didn’t like what we were watching on the tv, we would turn it off, if we wanted to listen to music we would use another physical thing such as a Walkman or the radio but now, everything we want to learn or want to listen to is in one single app or all on our phones. I believe, us seeking the easy way out on everything is a large part of the problem too
