Info About Ashura Lecture by: Maulana Ahmad Musa Jibril That is actually a very good and timely question regarding Ashura. Jazakallah khair. Mingling with the Rafidah, combined with a lack of teaching Tawhid in our Masajid and the influence of interfaith initiatives, 1 has created a generation of youth who are confused in their aqeedah (creed)2 and their worship. Similar to what you mentioned, I recently met a younger brother who told me he was going to fast on Ashura. As we began talking, he said he was fasting because it commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. 3 But that is not why we fast. The Rafidah have their Ashura, and we, Ahlus Sunnah, have our Ashura. The only commonality between our Ashura and theirs is the name. That is the only similarity; everything else is entirely different. The Linguistic and Historical Origins To understand this better linguistically, the word Ashura comes from ashara, which means the number ten. It is a derivative of the number ten. To us, Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, it is legislated (shar'i) that Ashura is the 10th day of the first Islamic month, Muharram. It is the day we celebrate because it commemorates the day Allah rescued Musa (Moses) and Bani Israel (the Children of Israel) from Firaun (Pharaoh) and his army. The Rafidah's version of this day centers on their claim that Al-Hussain was killed on the 10th of Muharram. They revive this memory through innovations—beating themselves with chains, slashing their own and their children’s foreheads, and striking their chests and backs. Every year, we see this foolishness. To clarify, our Ashura commemorates the rescue of Musa and his people, and the destruction of Firaun and his army. It is true that Ibn Kathir documented in his book, Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah, that our beloved Al-Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) died on Friday, the 10th day of Muharram, in the year 61 AH (after the Hijrah). We love him dearly. He is the grandson of our beloved Messenger and the master of the youth in Jannah (Paradise). However, we do not innovate religious practices to commemorate his death or martyrdom. 4 What the Rafidah do is not truly about commemorating his martyrdom; rather, it is designed to revive hatred against Ahlus Sunnah in their hearts and the hearts of their children. They accuse Ahlus Sunnah of killing Al-Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him), ignoring the fact that we love him far more than they do. 5 If they were sincere, why don't they do the same to commemorate the martyrdom of Al-Hussain’s father, Ali, who was better than him and was killed by Ibn Muljam Al-Himyar? Or, taking it a step further, why don't they beat themselves to commemorate Al-Hussain's grandfather, our beloved Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)—the best man to ever walk the earth?6 The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) died from the lingering effects of the poison given to him by a Jewish woman in Khaybar.
