Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif has strongly supported the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the decision was necessary and should have been taken much earlier as the province’s law and order situation had deteriorated. Speaking during a meeting in London, Nawaz Sharif said the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had become increasingly alarming under the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government and that the federal authorities should have intervened earlier to prevent matters from getting out of control. The three-time former prime minister accused PTI of causing serious damage to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during its nearly 13 years in power, alleging that successive PTI administrations had failed to deliver effective governance and neglected the interests of ordinary people. Nawaz Sharif said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were patriotic Pakistanis who deserved better leadership and governance. He accused PTI of misusing provincial government resources for political confrontation with the federal authorities. He questioned how a provincial chief minister could use official resources to march on Islamabad and challenge the federation and other provinces. The PML-N president said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had finally been freed from PTI’s rule, describing the development as a major relief for the province. His remarks came amid heightened political tensions following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a decision strongly opposed by PTI, which has described the move as unconstitutional and politically motivated. Nawaz Sharif maintained that the intervention was overdue and necessary to restore stability. He said the PML-N remained committed to Pakistan’s development, stability and prosperity, adding that federal and provincial governments were making efforts to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
