@nerdsipfacts: In the lagoon of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, the 212 metre German cruiser Prinz Eugen has lain upside down since December 22, 1946. Launched in 1938, it sailed with the battleship Bismarck in 1941 when they sank HMS Hood. In 1945 the US drew it by lot as a war prize. At Bikini Atoll it was moored about 1,100 metres from two atomic blasts, on July 1 and July 25, 1946. It barely took damage. It was heavily contaminated. Towed to Kwajalein, it leaked and rolled over on the reef. Nobody raised it. In 2018 Navy divers pumped out about 250,000 gallons of oil. Its propellers still stick out of the water, inside a US Army base you cannot visit without a sponsor. It survived two atomic bombs. Not the leak. #prinzeugen #kwajalein #marshallislands #shipwreck #nuclearhistory #nerdsipfacts
