This is one of the biggest Senate races in the country, and I have struggled a LOT with this prediction. It has taken a ton of thought and analysis, but I ultimately have Democrat Troy Jackson narrowly defeating Republican incumbent Susan Collins by just 0.72 percentage points. One of the biggest factors is Maine’s political elasticity. Maine is an incredibly independent state where voters are willing to split tickets, cross party lines, and support independent or third-party candidates. This makes Maine especially difficult to predict, as voters have historically been willing to support moderate candidates regardless of party affiliation. Susan Collins is also an incredible electoral performer. She has survived difficult political environments and won by large margins, most notably in 2008 and 2020. In 2008, she won comfortably despite Obama carrying Maine by a significant margin. In 2020, she defeated Sara Gideon by roughly 8.6 points, even as Biden won the state by around nine points. However, her electoral advantage has narrowed considerably in recent years as politics have become increasingly polarized. Maine remains a Democratic-leaning state in presidential elections and has generally leaned further Democratic than the nation overall. Trump’s approval ratings are also low in Maine, which I think could create additional problems for Collins. Despite her reputation as an independent-minded Republican, Collins has supported several major Trump administration priorities, which could make it harder for her to separate herself from the national Republican Party. Another factor is the controversy surrounding immigration enforcement in Maine. The reported ICE-related shooting in Biddeford over the summer sparked considerable anger and protests, including demonstrations directed at Collins’s office. I think controversies like this could influence the political environment, although their actual electoral impact is difficult to measure. One comparison I keep coming back to is the 2024 Senate elections in Montana and Ohio. Democratic Senators Jon Tester and Sherrod Brown were both known for appealing to voters outside their party, but neither could overcome the increasingly Republican lean of their states. I wonder whether something similar could happen to Collins in Maine, just in the opposite direction. I also think there is growing frustration with longtime politicians and the political establishment. Issues like congressional term limits, corruption, stock trading, and government accountability have become major campaign topics. Collins has served in the Senate for nearly three decades, and I think some voters may be ready for a change. Jackson, meanwhile, has a progressive, populist political style and a background in organized labor. I think this could help him appeal to rural and working-class Mainers. Collins is sticking with her traditional approach of emphasizing moderation and connecting directly with voters, which has worked incredibly well for her in previous elections. Don’t get me wrong, I could genuinely see this race going Republican by 5–10 points or Democratic by 5–10 points. Maine is THAT unpredictable, and Collins has repeatedly proven that she can outperform the political environment. I would not be surprised whatsoever if she won again. However, I think the combination of Maine’s Democratic lean, Trump’s unpopularity in the state, increasing polarization, and the national political environment could finally be enough to defeat Collins. #maine #susancollins #politics #midtermelections2026 #trump
