The beginning is exactly when we're most likely to explain things away. You like him, the chemistry is good, and you don't want to “overthink” every little thing. So you notice something uncomfortable and tell yourself, “Nobody's perfect.” True. But some of the things you dismiss early become the exact reasons you're crying six months later. Here are 10 I would NEVER casually brush aside: 1. HE’S INCONSISTENT FROM THE BEGINNING One week he's calling every day and planning dates. The next, you're wondering whether he's still alive 😂. Then he returns with enough attention to get you interested again. Don't mistake emotional whiplash for chemistry. 2. HE DOESN’T RESPECT SMALL BOUNDARIES You say you don't want to go to his house yet. He keeps asking. You say something makes you uncomfortable. He jokes about it again. Women sometimes wait for a HUGE boundary violation before taking this seriously. Watch what he does with the small ones. 3. EVERY EX HE’S EVER HAD WAS “CRAZY” Apparently this innocent man has somehow dated seven completely unreasonable women 😂. Listen for accountability. Can he tell you what HE did wrong in previous relationships? If every story makes him the victim and every woman the villain, eventually you may become the next chapter. 4. HIS WORDS ARE ALREADY BETTER THAN HIS ACTIONS He talks beautifully. He wants marriage. He wants children. He's “never felt like this before.” Lovely. Now watch what he actually does. Early promises are cheap. Consistent behavior is where you find the truth. 5. HE’S DISRESPECTFUL WHEN HE’S ANGRY Name-calling. Threats. Silent treatment for days. Punching walls. Cruel comments he later says he “didn't mean.” Don't dismiss terrible conflict behavior because the relationship is wonderful when he's happy. You need to know who you're dating when he DOESN'T get his way. I actually talk about this in my guide, How to Read Him Like an Open Book (you can download it through the link in my bio), because one charming date tells you very little about a man's character. Patterns, especially when he's frustrated, disappointed or no longer trying to impress you, tell you much more. 6. HE’S ALREADY MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR NEEDS ARE “TOO MUCH” You ask for consistency. “You're needy.” You ask where the relationship is going. “Why are you putting pressure on me?” You ask for more effort. “Nothing I do is ever enough for you.” Eventually, you may stop asking, not because your needs disappeared, but because you've been trained to feel guilty for having them. 7. YOU KEEP CATCHING HIM IN “SMALL” LIES Where he was. Who he was with. Whether he spoke to his ex. Something completely unnecessary. And you tell yourself, “Well, it's not a BIG lie.” The subject of the lie isn't always the biggest issue. Sometimes the red flag is how easily lying comes to him. 8. HE’S JEALOUS AND CONTROLLING, BUT CALLS IT LOVE He wants your passwords. Doesn't like certain friends. Questions what you're wearing. Gets upset when you go somewhere without him. At first it can feel like, “Aww, he really doesn't want to lose me.” Possessiveness isn't proof of devotion. 9. YOU’RE ALREADY DOING MOST OF THE RELATIONSHIP WORK You're initiating conversations, planning dates, fixing disagreements, reminding him, checking in and keeping the connection alive. And this is the BEGINNING. If you're already carrying the relationship during the stage when people usually bring their best effort, don't ignore that. 10. SOMETHING CONSISTENTLY FEELS OFF, BUT YOU KEEP TALKING YOURSELF OUT OF IT Not every anxious feeling is intuition. But if specific behaviors repeatedly make you uncomfortable and you keep creating explanations because you really want the relationship to work, stop and look at the facts. Don't ask only, “Do I like him?” Ask, “Do I like what I'm experiencing with him?” Because the red flag you keep explaining away at month two can become the reason you're desperately trying to leave at year two. Which red flag do you think women excuse the MOST at the beginning? 👀
