My mom worked w a lady fresh of the boat from Vietnam. Our area at the time had like no Asian people and she wasn’t treated super well. My mom was her first coworker who treated her well so she invited us to her aunts restaurant as a show of appreciation. That evening I had BBH for the first time. I wish I was exaggerating when I say my life changed that night. BBH is so good. It introduced me to Asian food outside of Chinese fast food and sushi. The shop has since shut down and my mom’s friend got married and moved. There’s been three new viet restaurants in town since then and none of them are close. One time one of the servers saw my face fall after my first sip of broth and came over to ask what was wrong. I told them about the taste I was searching for. Apparently I’m not the only one who came in and was disappointed with the BBH. I asked if what they were serving was a more Americanized version and that was why it was so different. Apparently it’s a regional thing and BBH is from central Vietnam and most of the families who had recently moved to my area were from the north. Every time I drive past the building that used to contain the best soup in the world and also a really big koi fish I feel a little more heartbreak. Now it’s just empty and dusty. In a way so am I. Anyone from central Vietnam who is willing to share a recipe please dm me. I will genuinely never forget that soup. The people were great too I made wonderful friends, I learned what it takes to run a restaurant, I learned how scary it is to truly leave your home, I learned you can connect with people so different than you in every way. I never learned how to make that soup. I wish I had
