Makoto’s character arc is an incredible exploration of identity, rebellion, insecurity, societal expectations, and the struggle to discover what you genuinely want out of life when you’ve spent so long living according to everyone else’s standards. From the beginning, Makoto is trapped within a system that measures her worth through academic achievement, obedience, and usefulness to authority figures. Despite being incredibly intelligent and perceptive, she constantly feels the need to prove herself because she has internalized the belief that her value depends on meeting other people’s expectations. HER BIGGEST FLAW IS ALSO ONE OF HER MOST INTERESTING CHARACTER TRAITS: SHE MISTAKES BEING USEFUL FOR BEING VALUABLE. Her relationship with Sae adds another layer of emotional complexity, showing how admiration, grief, familial pressure, and the desire for recognition can shape someone’s worldview. Makoto doesn’t simply want to succeed academically; she wants to become someone her sister can be proud of, even when that desire comes at the expense of her own happiness and individuality. AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES HER REBELLION SO SATISFYING. Her awakening isn’t just a cool transformation accompanied by an iconic Persona and an incredible aesthetic. JOHANNA IS SUCH A THEMATICALLY FITTING PERSONA, TOO, REPRESENTING A WOMAN WHO DEFIED THE EXPECTATIONS AND CONVENTIONS OF HER TIME. Makoto’s rebellious identity directly contrasts with the rigid, controlled image she initially presents to the world, making her character design, dialogue, and development feel meaningfully connected. Her intelligence never makes her immune to insecurity, her sense of justice never makes her incapable of mistakes, and her desire to help people doesn’t automatically mean she understands herself. SHE HAS TO LEARN THAT FOR HERSELF. Her dynamic with the other Phantom Thieves also gives her character plenty of personality, especially as she gradually becomes more comfortable expressing herself beyond the serious, academically focused persona she initially maintains. Watching her develop confidence, embrace her individuality, and discover interests outside her responsibilities makes her feel like an actual person rather than a character whose entire existence revolves around the plot.
