@thedamienvale: A pretty interesting piece of history was recently discovered at Hardwick Hall, a 16th-century mansion in Derbyshire, England! A tourist noticed something that had apparently gone unnoticed by staff for centuries: an old carving on a wooden door known as a “witch's mark.” The symbol is actually called a hexafoil, or daisy wheel. It's a six-petaled design that people used to carve into doors, windows, fireplaces, and other entrances to their homes. Now, despite the name, these marks weren't actually made by witches. They were carved by ordinary people or builders who believed the symbols could protect their homes from witches, evil spirits, demons, and other supernatural threats. Elena Williams, the house manager at Hardwick Hall, was photographed using a flashlight to get a better look at the faint carving. Apparently, the corridor was so poorly lit that nobody had noticed it until a sharp-eyed visitor spotted it. What's really fascinating is that these carvings give us a glimpse into what people feared and believed hundreds of years ago. Imagine walking past the same door for years, only to discover that someone carved a protective symbol into it more than 400 years ago! #witch #witchcraft #History #mark #England
