You can recognise that walk now. He wasn’t going over to ask what happened. He was going over because he’d already decided he didn’t like what was happening. Fermin was on the ground, their goalkeeper was trying to pull him up, and Lamine wanted him to leave his teammate alone. I understand that reaction. But I was watching from the technical area thinking, Lamine, please, we have a football match to finish. Then another player came over, pushed him, Lamine reacted, and suddenly everybody was involved. I turned to one of my assistants and said, ‘He has forgotten how old he is.’ My assistant said, ‘I think the other players have forgotten too.’ And that is quite interesting. Because when people speak about Lamine, they always mention his age. He’s so young, look at what he’s doing, imagine what he will become. But on the pitch, he doesn’t behave like somebody waiting for the older players to give him permission to belong there. He sees Fermin on the floor, and he goes to help him. He doesn’t look around first to see if Pedri or somebody else is going to do it. In that moment, he isn’t thinking about being our number 10 or about the goal he scored earlier. He’s thinking, that’s my teammate, and somebody is treating him badly. I like that he cares. I like that our players protect each other. What I don’t like is when protecting somebody turns into a confrontation that can cost the team. Afterwards, I spoke to him. I said, ‘Lamine, I understand why you went over. But what happens if the referee sends you off?’ He said, ‘Coach, I wasn’t trying to fight anybody.’ I told him, ‘I know. But sometimes you don’t get to decide how the other player reacts.’ He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, ‘But he shouldn’t have been pulling Fermín like that.’ I said, ‘You’re right. And you still have to be clever.’ That’s an important conversation for us to have. Lamine has a lot of courage with the ball. Everybody can see it. He’ll receive it with two defenders around him and still try to find a way through. But courage without control can become a problem. Opponents know how important he is to us. Some will try to frustrate him, provoke him or pull him into situations where he forgets about the match. He has to learn that he can defend his teammates without giving the opposition exactly what they want. And I think he will. What made me smile afterwards was Fermin telling him that he didn’t need rescuing. Lamine said, ‘Then why were you still lying there?’ Fermin told him, ‘Because I was waiting for the referee.’ And Lamine replied, ‘Well, I wasn’t.’ They were laughing about it by then. That’s the dressing room we have. They can disagree, they can tease each other, but there is a genuine affection between these players. We scored five goals against Betis. Lamine scored a wonderful goal and created another. Everybody will talk about his football, and rightly so. But when I watched that incident again, I saw something else. I saw a young player who, for a few seconds, forgot about himself because he thought one of his friends needed help.
