I Wish It Was Me 🤍 I want to share a little about this song and why some songs are so much harder for me to write than others. A few weeks ago, I received a message from a mom named Tori. Her little girl has been going through cancer treatment, and she wanted to know if I would consider writing a song about what childhood cancer does to the mental health of the parents. Not just what their children are going through, but what happens to a mom or dad who has to watch their child suffer and can’t do a damn thing to take it away. And as a mom of six, that hit me hard. I told Tori I would be honored to write something for her. What I didn’t tell her was how much pressure I would end up putting on myself to get it right. I do this with so many of my songs. I take on the emotions behind the stories people share with me. I sit with them, I think about them, and sometimes I find myself carrying that sadness around long after I’ve finished writing. And I know I make things harder on myself than they probably need to be. I question the words, I change things a hundred times, I listen over and over, and even when I finally finish something, there’s always that little voice in my head telling me I could have done better. It’s something I struggle with in my own life, and unfortunately it doesn’t just disappear when I’m writing music. But this one was different. Because I kept thinking about Tori and her little girl. I kept thinking about what it must feel like to hear the word cancer attached to your child’s name. To wake up every morning scared of what the day might bring. To want nothing more than to trade places with your baby and know that no matter how much you love them, you can’t. And I kept asking myself, how on earth do I put something like that into a song and do it justice? I don’t think I can ever fully understand what Tori is living through. And I certainly don’t want to pretend I do. But I wanted her to feel heard. That’s the pressure I put on myself. It’s not about writing a perfect song or getting a million views. It’s about knowing that someone has trusted me with something incredibly painful and wanting so badly not to let them down. And sometimes my own struggles make it really difficult for me to just sit back, listen to something I’ve created and be happy with it. I’m always looking for the thing I could have said better. I finished this song today, and I told Tori I wasn’t completely confident I’d done her story justice. Because that’s genuinely how I feel. But I also know that if I wait until I think something is perfect, some of these songs may never see the light of day. So tonight I’m sharing I Wish It Was Me. For Tori, her little girl, and every parent who has ever wished they could take their child’s pain and carry it themselves. I hope I’ve found at least some of the words you’ve been trying to say. And Tori, thank you for trusting me with even a small part of your journey. I really do hope I’ve done it justice. 🤍 #IWishItWasMe #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #CancerParents #MentalHealthAwareness #sayitformemusic
