Tomoko Kuroki, often called Tomoko, is the main character of the Japanese manga and anime series WataMote (No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!). She is a high-school girl whose biggest goal is to become socially successful and popular, but she struggles tremendously with social interaction, confidence, and understanding how other people perceive her. Tomoko is a particularly interesting character because she isn't simply portrayed as a stereotypical shy or quiet girl. She has an extremely active imagination and spends a lot of time thinking about how she could become more popular, attractive, or socially impressive. Unfortunately, the plans she comes up with often go badly because she misunderstands social situations or becomes overwhelmed by anxiety. A major part of the series' comedy comes from the huge difference between how Tomoko imagines herself and how other people actually see her. She spends a lot of time alone and has difficulty making friends. Before high school, she had experience with games and online interactions, which makes her believe that she should be able to handle high school socially. However, real-life interactions are much harder for her. She frequently overthinks conversations, worries about embarrassing herself, and sometimes avoids talking to people altogether because she is afraid of being judged. One of Tomoko's defining characteristics is her awkwardness. She can have good intentions but still say or do something strange because she doesn't know how to behave in a particular social situation. She sometimes rehearses conversations in her head beforehand, imagining an ideal interaction, only for reality to turn out completely differently. This makes her experiences both funny and uncomfortable, because the audience can see how badly she wants to connect with other people. Tomoko is also very imaginative. Her thoughts can become incredibly elaborate, and she often creates dramatic scenarios in her head. She might imagine herself becoming popular, having an impressive romantic life, or finally being admired by everyone around her. These fantasies contrast sharply with her ordinary life, where she may be sitting alone or struggling to figure out what to say to someone. Despite her desire to be popular, Tomoko isn't necessarily a bad person. She can be selfish, jealous, cynical, or petty at times, but the story also shows that she genuinely cares about certain people. Her relationship with her younger brother Tomoki is an important example. Their interactions can be awkward and argumentative, but they have a sibling relationship underneath all of that. Another important person in Tomoko's life is her friend Yuu. Yuu is almost the opposite of Tomoko socially: she's confident, attractive, and much more comfortable interacting with people. Tomoko sometimes compares herself to Yuu and becomes jealous or insecure, but Yuu is also someone Tomoko feels comfortable around. Their friendship helps show how Tomoko's social difficulties don't mean that she is incapable of forming meaningful relationships. As the story progresses, Tomoko gradually changes. She doesn't suddenly become an outgoing, perfectly confident person. Instead, her development is much more gradual. She begins interacting with more people and forms relationships that she wouldn't have expected at the beginning of the story. She also becomes more aware of other people's feelings and learns that she doesn't always have to live entirely inside her own head. One of the most compelling things about Tomoko is that her growth isn't presented as a complete transformation into a different person. She's still awkward, strange, anxious, and prone to embarrassing herself. However, she slowly becomes more connected to the people around her. Rather than simply achieving her original goal of becoming "popular," she starts developing genuine friendships and experiences. #tomokokuroki #tomoko #watamote
