Hi I'm whiter than a saltine but I was wondering if it would be appropriate for me to set up a ofrenda for my mom? My beautiful mom died 6 years ago this Christmas and I talked to a friend about the idea of having a Ofrenda for my mom, she said she doesn't think I should because of cultural appropriation. I’m very very conflicted. I grew up in a very white household. I’m adopted so I have severed knowledge of my lineage but I know confirmed I’m native American (working to find where I’m from). But I learned a while ago (really I knew this but didn’t put it together) that a few of my biological aunts and uncle possibly have Hispanic lineage (I say possibly because it’s either by birth or marriage) and a few biological cousins (8 or so) have Hispanic lineage. But because I was adopted I didn’t get to know my biological family’s lineage. So why I’m conflicted is because I feel like I don’t have the right to make an ofrenda because I’m not (potentially not) Hispanic myself but some members of my biological family are? I had an idea of a guitar shadowbox altar but still I’m unsure. Sometimes I hate being adopted…

I saw an Ofrenda in person for the first time last year. It was at a Mexican restaurant. I stood there, crying for people and pets I never knew. It was beautiful. I want to go back and see if they have one up yet.

I already have a small alter set up for my soul dog that passed. It has a picture of him, his collar, his ashes, and a candle. Should I just add my sugar skull dog, marigolds, and a small dish of water and a treat for him? Or do I need to set up something completely new? This is my first time celebrating for a lost pet and I want to do it right!
