@finvory: By 1860, the United States held almost four million people in slavery. But nowhere near four million Africans had arrived directly on slave ships to mainland North America. That’s the part of the story people often miss. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database estimates that roughly 12.5 million captive Africans were forced onto ships bound across the Atlantic. Most went elsewhere in the Americas. Only a relatively small share were carried directly to mainland British North America and the future United States. Yet by 1860, the U.S. Census counted exactly: 3,953,760 enslaved people. (Slave Voyages) How? Because by then, the overwhelming majority of enslaved Black Americans had been born in the United States. And American slavery treated their children as property too. Under the legal principle known as partus sequitur ventrem, a child’s status followed the mother. If an enslaved woman gave birth, her child was legally enslaved. Generation after generation. Then, beginning January 1, 1808, federal law prohibited the legal importation of enslaved people from abroad. It did not abolish slavery. And it did not abolish the buying and selling of enslaved people already inside the United States. The domestic slave trade expanded enormously. Slave traders bought men, women, and children in places such as Virginia and Maryland and forced them south and west into expanding cotton and sugar regions. The National Park Service describes hundreds of thousands being moved from the Upper South into the Lower South in what historians have called the Second Middle Passage. (National Park Service) Families were separated. Children were sold away from parents. People were marched in chained coffles or transported aboard ships to markets in places like New Orleans and Natchez. And enslavers understood that births increased their wealth. Thomas Jefferson put that economic logic into chilling language. In an 1820 letter discussing plantation finances, he described an enslaved woman’s children as an “addition to the capital.” That wasn’t metaphorical. Under slavery, a child born to an enslaved mother could be valued, inherited, mortgaged, seized for debt, or sold. The population grew. And people were redistributed toward the expanding plantation economy. The Census records the result: 1790: about 698,000 enslaved people. 1860: 3,953,760. (Census) So America’s nearly four million enslaved people in 1860 weren’t the result of four million arrivals from Africa. They were the descendants of earlier generations of Africans and African Americans trapped inside a hereditary system that made slavery pass from mother to child. The Atlantic trade brought their ancestors here. American law made slavery reproduce itself across generations. #Slavery #BlackHistory #DomesticSlaveTrade #tiktokmademelearnit #learnhistoryontiktok

There is a trail along the James river which was created by the slaves walking from the slave ships to Shacko Slip where the slave market was held. The steets in this area are made of cobble stones. I remember there is a fountain there with black faces all around the fountain and a sign that says for those who loved animals. Downtown Richmond Virginia.

Between 388,000 and 450,000 enslaved Africans were brought directly to mainland North America (what became the United States) during the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
