In Denmark, a McDonald’s crew member can earn around $20 an hour and receive six weeks of paid time off. Evening shifts, Sunday work, and public holidays can push the hourly rate considerably higher. In December 2024, the adult base wage was 141.24 kroner, worth about $19.67 at the time. The surprise is that Denmark does not have a government-set minimum wage at all. Instead, pay and working conditions emerge from collective agreements negotiated between employers and unions. At McDonald’s, those negotiations are conducted with 3F, a union representing restaurant employees. The arrangement grew out of a confrontation that began after the chain arrived in Denmark in 1981. Unions organized demonstrations and boycotts as McDonald’s resisted joining the country’s collective bargaining system. In 1989, after nearly seven years of organizing and mounting pressure, the company accepted an agreement that secured better wages and workplace rights. That legacy now includes five weeks of legally required vacation, plus five extra days negotiated by unions. Eligible employees also receive paid sick leave, parental leave, and pension contributions that build toward retirement. Workers who join 3F can additionally obtain group life insurance through their union membership. A special savings arrangement gives workers another pool of money to allocate toward benefits or additional earnings. And although individual hours and eligibility differ, the workplace agreement sets protections even for employees who never join the union.
