# The Midnight Calls I Wish I Could Answer One More Time ❤️🥀 Tonight, I was lying in bed when my mind suddenly wandered back to my sister. It's funny how memories work. One minute you're lying quietly, and the next, you're back in a moment you wish you could experience just one more time. My sister had a habit of calling me in the middle of the night. And when I say the middle of the night, I mean the hours when most people are sleeping peacefully. There I was, answering the phone, wondering what was going on now. And, of course, it was usually about her husband! The funny part was that she was older than me. You would think she should have been the one giving me advice, right? But somehow, I was always the one she called when she needed it. I can still imagine her lying there, wide awake, while her husband slept peacefully beside her, completely unaware that he was about to become the subject of our midnight conversation. Then she'd say, “What can I do to wake him up? He doesn't even touch me anymore!” Girl, at that hour? 😂 I would tell her, “Wake him up! Get on top of him, kiss him, hug him. Do something! Don't just lie there complaining to me while that man is sleeping!” I can almost hear myself laughing as I gave my older sister advice about her marriage. Those calls were spontaneous, funny, and full of the little things only sisters can share. Sometimes she called me, and sometimes I called her. We talked about life, relationships, problems, and things that might not have meant much to anybody else but meant everything to us. Eventually, she moved all the way to Arizona. Visiting wasn't as simple as driving across town anymore. There were miles between us, responsibilities, and all the reasons life sometimes keeps people apart. But distance never erased our bond. And now she's gone. That's the part my heart still struggles to understand. I would give anything to answer one of those midnight calls again. I wouldn't complain about being woken up. I wouldn't tell her to call me tomorrow. I would just listen, laugh, and treasure every word. Because sometimes, we don't realize how precious ordinary moments are until they become memories. My sister and I shared more than laughter. We shared painful experiences, too. We had both been through forms of abuse, and there were things I could open up to her about because she understood parts of my story. I didn't have to explain everything. In some ways, she understood because she had lived through her own struggles. We weren't perfect. No family is. We had different personalities, different opinions, and our own ways of handling life. But we shared a history that belonged to us. Lying here tonight, I find myself thinking about all the people we love and how we never imagine how many goodbyes life will bring. We argue, misunderstand one another, laugh together, share secrets, and sometimes take ordinary conversations for granted. We think there will always be another phone call, another visit, another chance to talk. But life doesn't always give us that chance. I miss my sister. I miss her voice, her funny complaints, and the way she trusted me enough to call in the middle of the night. I miss being her little sister and somehow becoming her marriage counselor! If I could speak to her one more time, I would say: “Girl, you have no idea how much I miss you. Remember all those times you called me in the middle of the night to complain about your husband? I never thought I'd miss those calls this much. You were the older one! You should have been giving ME advice!” Then I'd wipe away a tear and probably laugh, because that's how I want to remember her, too. And I'd tell her, “I hope you're at peace. And if you're still giving somebody a hard time up there, please don't call me in the middle of the night. I still need my sleep!” 😂❤️ That's what love leaves behind. Not just sadness, but stories that make us laugh through our tears. Memories that hurt because they mattered. Little moments that we share as sisters
