Four Canadian Armed Forces members have been killed and dozens of others seriously injured in a fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Sunday. The fire broke out in the base’s training area at approximately 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 17, and spread rapidly beyond the training area, according to the Department of National Defence. Speaking on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Sunday, Carney said the families of the four deceased service members had been notified. Those affected included reservists and soldiers from Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, who had travelled from military bases across Canada to participate in training. “Those we lost, those who were injured, were training to defend Canada, to serve Canada, and now Canada serves them,” Carney said. The prime minister said he had requested a detailed account of the incident and would receive a formal briefing Sunday afternoon involving senior military officials and federal and provincial representatives in Wainwright. “Our soldiers, civilian personnel, and emergency responders are working closely with local authorities to respond to this situation,” Carney said. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries resulting from this incident.” He also pledged continued support for the families of those killed and for injured service members throughout their recovery. “We will be there for their families for as long as they need,” he said. The Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the incident. Authorities have not yet established the cause of the fire. Carney also said the Canadian flag would fly at half-mast on federal buildings across the country in honour of those affected by the tragedy.
