The tea ceremony was never really about tea. Okakura Kakuzō, the Japanese scholar who wrote The Book of Tea in 1906 while working at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, was trying to explain something his American friends kept missing about Japanese culture. Almost any ordinary activity can hold the same kind of meaning that people assume belongs only to something rare or ceremonial. Waiting for water to boil, noticing the steam, using plain, well made tools properly, none of it is special because tea is special. It's special because of the attention brought to it. Okakura believed the same approach works on flowers, on driving, on cooking, even on brushing your teeth and noticing the exact texture of the paste. Nothing is inherently mundane or meaningful on its own. What decides that is entirely how present we manage to be while doing it. Follow us for more useful ideas, every day.
