@recycldstardust: Apple picking is a beloved fall tradition, but what does it have to do with the Haudenosaunee? While apples originated in Central Asia and were introduced to North America by Europeans, the Haudenosaunee have a long history of cultivating orchards and incorporating apples into our foodways. By the 1700s, Haudenosaunee communities maintained productive apple orchards alongside our traditional crops of corn, beans, and squash. During the American Revolution, Sullivan’s campaign destroyed Haudenosaunee villages, agricultural fields, food stores, and thousands of fruit trees, including apple orchards. So the next time you go apple picking, remember that Indigenous agricultural history extends far beyond the Three Sisters. Our ancestors were skilled farmers whose orchards were part of thriving communities. #nativehistory #nativeamerican #IndigenousTikTok

it's worse when you learn how apple trees work. you can't just plant apple seeds, you need to graft old branches onto new trees
