@japdmedia26: New York City, New York, USA 🇺🇸 — Mayor Zohran Mamdani has ordered a major review of New York City Police Department (NYPD) use-of-force policies while making clear that Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch will remain in her position. The announcement, made on October 12, 2026, marks the first comprehensive review of NYPD use-of-force policies in a decade. The initiative is expected to examine police procedures, strengthen accountability and include input from community members. On October 13, Mamdani reaffirmed his support for Tisch, saying he had “no plans” to replace her. His decision comes as progressive activists call for stronger changes to the department. The dispute intensified after an October 8 incident in Marble Hill, where federal immigration agents shøt and wounded a man during an enforcement operation. A child was also inside the vehicle but was reported unharmed. The NYPD said it was not involved in the initial incident. The incident was followed by protests and criticism of how authorities handled the situation. Some activists have questioned the NYPD's response and called for Tisch's removal. Mamdani, however, has defended keeping the commissioner, pointing to her work on police corruption and public safety. His administration says the new review is intended to improve oversight and accountability. The mayor has also announced measures aimed at preventing officers accused of serious misconduct from retiring before disciplinary proceedings are completed. The decision has exposed disagreements between Mamdani's administration and some progressive supporters who want more extensive policing reforms. Critics argue that the announced measures do not go far enough, while supporters of retaining Tisch see continuity in police leadership as important. The review is expected to continue over the coming months, with community input forming part of the process. The key question now: Will the review lead to substantial changes in NYPD policies, or will activists continue to demand broader reforms?
