I genuinely don’t know how people are doing this anymore. I can’t imagine what families with children are going through right now, because as a single person on one income with a mortgage, I am already finding the cost of living in Australia so fucking hard. Every RBA interest rate increase, every strata bill, council rates, electricity bill, groceries, insurance payments, home repair. All of it lands on one person. There is no second income. No one to split the mortgage with. No one to absorb the unexpected expense when something breaks. And yes, I budget. I know how to manage money, I know what my bills are, I know what my fun money is, and I know what I can afford. Do I sometimes buy clothes or something for my home because it makes life feel a little lighter? Absolutely. But, I barely travel. I’m a long-distance daughter. I hardly get to see my family. I don’t think financial responsibility should mean stripping every enjoyable thing out of your life just so you can say you’re surviving. There is only so much you can cut before the problem is no longer your spending. The problem is that the cost of simply existing keeps going up. And I think that’s part of why Australian TikTok is so full of hauls. Sometimes spending whatever little discretionary money you have left feels like one of the only choices you still get to make. Because that’s the part I’m struggling with most - the loss of autonomy. The longer this goes on, the more it feels like choices are being made for me. Can I afford to travel? Can I afford children? Can I afford to stay in this house? Can I afford to stay in this country for another five or ten years? So now I’m constantly thinking about more work, more income streams, side projects, businesses - anything to make myself feel financially safer and wondering how much more one person is actually expected to do just to keep one ordinary life afloat. I know families are doing it incredibly tough too. But being single in an economy that increasingly feels built for two incomes is fucking hard. So genuinely: if you’re single, living alone, renting or paying a mortgage in Australia right now…how are you doing this? #costoflivingaustralia #rba #interestrates #costofliving #singlelife
