@naturereliance: What would you do in these 3 hiking trail situations? An abandoned backpack, an unfamiliar shortcut, and realizing you're lost in the woods. Good judgment can make all the difference. What would YOU do? #HikingSafety #WildernessSurvival #HikingTips #TrailSafety #OutdoorSkills
never hike without telling someone where you are going

lone backpack, nothing wrong with calling out to see if anyone claims it, chances are they are not far from it. if no one answers, take a look and see if anything can ID the owner and let the Rangers know. Never take advice from strangers. I have always told people to carry a deck of cards with them. In case you get lost, you need to calm your mind, and an easy game of solitaire does that. and eventually someone will look over your shoulder and tell you that you missed a move.

I like to panic. At times I have led group panics. Utility companies have taken advantage of the swath I have created and run their power lines along them. 😊

All unvetted shortcuts lead to Donner Pass at midwinter. Just say no.

Leave the back pack, if you go back by a couple hours later and its still there pick it up, look for an ID tag (phone #) and note the location, and notify rangers. Stay on the known trail-no shortcut. If lost, I'd do exact I y what you said. I ALWAYS let someone know where I'm going and when I plan on being back

Leave the backpack alone and bite the location and report it to the rangers. NEVER TAKE A SHORTCUT THAT A STRANGER TELLS YOU ABOUT!! Yep sit, focus, think, and breathe. Then try to find myself. Listen to the surroundings, listen for water or a possible road.

backpack warrants a quick note with GPS. shortcut, "no, I'm good". if I'm lost I have a map, compass, gps, and if all else fails, a whistle and a signal mirror. also noting landmarks of a map and using the compass to note where you are help.

I tried the shortcut thing and ended up lost in Flathead National Forest. What was supposed to be a 4 mile hike turned into like 11

GPS the backpack and do not touch it. It could be someone waiting for just that one person to pause long enough - kidnapped. 2 never go off trail thinking shortcut. It maybe a plan for you to be attacked. 3 when going on hikes, put emergency food bars and drinks in backpack along with other essentials for surviving. Sit out in the open; but safe from predators

1: I’d do the same thing 2: I would not take the short cut 3: I would use my map, if I genuinely believe I have seriously gotten lost, I’d call emergency services

I would not take a shortcut that I don’t know anything about and if I get lost, I would do what you said try to find myself on GPS and if not, I would call for help, but I would always let somebody know where I was going
