#MarkCuban asked a question back in January that every #American with health insurance should be asking. Why would an #insurancecompany pay $2,500 for an MRI when a center down the street will do it for $350? The replies filled up with people who had lived it. One person was quoted more than $1,500 through insurance and paid $275 cash at an independent imaging center. Another was quoted $1,200 to $3,200 through insurance and found the same scan for $212. Others shared insurance bills from about $2,400 to more than $9,000 for scans they could have gotten for a few hundred dollars somewhere else. Most of the gap comes down to where you get the scan. Hospitals set their own prices, and those prices often have very little to do with what the MRI costs to perform. Independent imaging centers usually charge a fraction of that for the same scan on similar equipment. Cuban said hospitals will even raise the bill when they think an insurer is willing to pay more, and he called healthcare a game of who can rip off who. Some people pushed back that insurers don't set prices and simply pay what providers bill. Either way, the patient and the employer end up covering the difference through higher premiums and bigger out-of-pocket bills. This is the same Mark Cuban behind Cost Plus Drugs, which sells medications at cost plus a small, published markup. So before your next MRI, CT scan, or X-ray, make two calls. Call an independent imaging center and ask for the cash price. Then call your insurance company and ask which independent centers near you are in-network, because that scan can be just as cheap and still count toward your deductible. That second part matters more than people realize. Cash payments usually don't count toward your deductible or out-of-pocket max, so if you're likely to hit your max this year because of a surgery or ongoing treatment, using insurance can still be the smarter move. If you pay cash, ask for a written good faith estimate, which self-pay patients are entitled to by law. A couple of phone calls can easily save you a thousand dollars or more on a single scan.
