Bend, Oregon. She could not walk on her own. She could not speak. Even swallowing was a daily battle. None of that stopped Saylor Graham from lighting up every single room she entered. Seven years old. Pink glasses. A stuffed animal kind of smile that made people stop what they were doing just to look at her. Saylor lives with a rare genetic condition called CASK. It affects how her brain and body develop. She uses a wheelchair. She is nonverbal. Her medical needs have followed her since the day she was born. And yet. High school students at Bend Senior High loved her so much they signed up through Sparrow Clubs USA to do community service in her name. Just to help carry her load. Matt Sampson runs Sparrow Clubs. He has worked with hundreds of children. He called Saylor the definition of light and joy. Thursday afternoon, she was sitting in her special needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary when a 16-year-old former student climbed the school fence with a shotgun. He shot Saylor in the face. She was seven years old. In a wheelchair. In a classroom where she was supposed to be safe. First responders reached her and fought to keep her alive right there on that floor. She was airlifted to Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland. She is in serious but stable condition. Her parents have not left her side. Kaylub Giamanco, the father who army-crawled through a shattered window and stopped the shooter, has said publicly he wants to meet Saylor. He wants to see her. Maybe because he was there. Maybe because he knows better than anyone what she survived. Three children and 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert did not make it out of that classroom. Saylor did. She has been fighting her whole life. She just did not know Thursday would ask her to fight like that.
