At the rehearsal dinner, McCarthy said Suri Cruise’s nanny brought the seven-month-old baby to her mother. McCarthy asked, “Can I hold the baby?” She said the whole room went quiet. “I got the Scientology stare,” she recalled. Later, Cruise introduced her to David Miscavige, the church’s leader and his best man. McCarthy said she told him, “You got picked, congratulations.” She said it sounded demeaning, and she remembered his scowl. She said Cruise was a “very nice human being.” She also called him “very, um, programmed.” McCarthy said meeting Miscavige gave her “a chill.” She said she was “supposedly meeting him at his best when he was trying to recruit me and Jim.” She also said Cruise would call Carrey and invite them to his Aspen house. She said Carrey believed they would try to “lure us in.” She said they had already tried once and he turned them down.
