Sumner Elementary School is a historic school building located in Topeka, Kansas, best known for its connection to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case of 1954. When Linda Brown was denied enrollment at Sumner because of racial segregation, she was forced to attend the all-Black Monroe Elementary School, which was farther from her home. Her father, Oliver Brown, joined a legal challenge against the Topeka Board of Education, helping bring national attention to the injustice of segregated public schools. Built in 1936 through a New Deal public works program, Sumner Elementary School was designed by architect Thomas W. Williamson in an architectural style combining Art Deco and Renaissance influences. The building features distinctive stone detailing and preserved historic elements, including original clocks, light fixtures, carved woodwork, bathroom fixtures, and a marble-rimmed fireplace in the kindergarten. Recognized for its historical and architectural importance, the school was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and designated a National Historic Landmark. The school closed in 1996 as part of a local desegregation plan connected to the original civil rights case. After its closure, the building experienced years of neglect and vandalism, and efforts to secure funding for its restoration proved difficult. In 2008, it was listed among America’s Most Endangered Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The following year, Bishop W. R.
