@woodify62: It cant get too much more boring than this, but i have been asked multiple times on this so this is how i deal with water in the bottom of grooves.. I also end grain seal the ends of the boards to give that little bit more protection. #viral #woodwork #joinery #uktiktok #creator
if wood doesnt rot.ya dont get any work.nobody see yr effort just the price.

That doesn't work the holes will get blocked up by spiders living in the holes I've seen it happen loads of times over 50 years as a bench joiner.

I love the quality of work. it's amazing! but each hole you have drilled has created a point where water/rot can track up the grain. I doubt that there is enough ventilation to dry the groove out so it will be damp most of the year. If I HAD to have a bottom rail I would slot the top of the rail and glue in a sliver then slot the bottom of the lining boards for the glued connection. You never want moisture going through a piece of Joinery

The thought that’s gone into this is brilliant, and your craftsmanship is of the highest standard—not that you need me to tell you! 😁
You asked what we think, so my preference would always be a solid bottom rail, as you’ve used, but with an open, angled rebate. I think I mentioned you in one of my videos about this.
For hardwood gate makers using a trench, your detail is a must in my view, provided they’re not using a film-forming coating. With a film-forming finish, I’d go a step further and use an open, angled rebate to help water drain away. It’s not quite as tidy-looking, granted, but in my experience it performs better over time.
Again, brilliant work. Love what you’re doing. 🙏

Practicalities > aesthetics. It doesn’t matter how well you think you can seal that the water will get in to the grain and destroy the door. Much better to have a sloped rebate so the water can run off. If you have to have a high side and fixed through with stainless steel screws then so be it.
