It was built about 40 years ago. I thought for sure there’d be plywood behind the brick. There wasn’t. Just this thin cardboard style sheathing. And a lot of builders still use it on new construction today. Brick doesn’t hold your house up. The wall behind it does. Brick is a veneer. It’s one layer of brick tied to the wall with metal ties, with a small air gap behind it. The framing and the sheathing do the real structural work. That thin sheathing is a fiberboard or laminated panel. It’s cheaper, lighter, and faster to put up than OSB plywood. When it’s installed right, it still meets code in most areas. But it’s not as strong. A lot of builders use OSB at the corners for bracing and the thin stuff everywhere else. Ask your builder which one goes on your house, and where.
