@805maps: Camarillo, California, was named after Adolfo Camarillo. He inherited Rancho Calleguas and contributed to the growth of Ventura County agriculture. The Southern Pacific Railroad later built a depot, and the community started to grow. Camarillo incorporated in 1964 with key destinations like the Camarillo Premium Outlets and the Camarillo Ranch House. What do you think about Camarillo? Do you have any stories of the history? #camarillo #oxnard #california #realestate #History

Juan Camarillo Sr., the man who purchased the land that eventually became Camarillo, California, was born in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1812. He moved to Alta California in 1834, when California was still part of Mexico. He was approximately 22 years old. His son, Adolfo Camarillo, who became the city's namesake, was born in Ventura, California, on October 29, 1864. So Juan was born in Mexico, while Adolfo was born in what was already the United States. What's particularly interesting is that Juan arrived in California 14 years before Mexico ceded California to the United States in 1848.

In 1914, he built the St. Mary Magdalen Church in Camarillo as a private chapel for his family and ranch hands. He later gifted it to the Archdiocese so the public could use it. Because of his massive lifelong contributions to the Catholic Church, Pope Pius XI named Adolfo a Knight of St. Gregory the Great in 1937.We read his plaque in Rome while travel studying in 2013. In 1939, Adolfo Camarillo donated 100 acres of prime ranch land on the hilltops of Camarillo to the Catholic Archdiocese. This land was used to build St. John’s Seminary and St. John’s Seminary College a major institution for training Catholic priests. Because it sat prominently on the hill, "St. John's" became synonymous with Adolfo's generosity in the local community.

Why did so many Camarillo kids come to high school in Newbury park if it was so “great” asking as a kid that went to NPHS.

I spent a lot time in Camarillo in the early 2000’s. Most of my old friends are from there. My sister and her family still live there. I love that little city.

Now it’s full of WHITE BIGOTS who mind any business but there’s. A city full of Spanish influence gentrified to its core by hatred and disgust for the very people it originally was established for. But hey, life moves on.
