On October 7, police visited a house in Miharu-cho, Otaru, Hokkaido, after a relative reported being unable to contact the family. Inside a locked basement storage room, officers discovered 52-year-old Tetsuya Ishiba wrapped in a futon and tied with cord. Investigators believe he had been dead for months, although an autopsy found no notable injuries and his cause of death remains unknown. His sister, Masumi Ishiba, 49, was missing. Police located her in Saitama Prefecture four days later and arrested her on October 11 on suspicion of thett. Investigators say ·200,000, approximately $1,300, was withdrawn using her brother's cash card at an Otaru post office AT at 9:45 a.m. on October 4. They also reported another withdrawal on her arrest date. Masumi, who is unemployed and has no fixed address, reportedly admitted the theft. Their father lives in a care facility.
