@lindsayellislee: The spread of misinformation is going to keep going and those of us within academia need to consider different modes of communication. How are we supposed to reach the people we intend to serve with our research if we keep sharing what we learn in ways they can’t access? #education #stopmisinformation #sciencecommunication #phdtok #phdlife
Why do we keep accepting the assumption that knowledge accumulated over many years can be communicated in just a few minutes? Information about tomorrow’s weather can be shared in seconds. Understanding the science behind weather prediction takes years. We seem to believe that anything can be communicated regardless of the knowledge the audience has. This is clearly not true. And has the perverse effect of making people believe that the knowledge we communicate is trivial, and after all didn’t need all those years to be acquired!

I just wrote an essay on this, as a freshman college student💅 academia has been getting increasingly exclusive. Partly due to gate keeping of knowledge and misinformation. I think the underlying problem would be judgment/superiority. They need to stop acting better/holier than thou, they are not actively helping ANYONE so I don’t get why they think they are so special. Ugh, classic old men. Some legislation around public speaking on social media would help. China has done some recent moves around certifying professionals online and removing misinformation. I would like to know more about what you think as far as solutions go!
