@haraldaustad: Synthwave is the 80s retro futuristic aesthetic defined by futuristic teal & neon pink colors, with laser grids, sunsets and supercars racing through the night. It has a neon noir vibe and is a combination of all our sci-fi memories & nostalgia, mashed up in a stylized version of how we saw the future in the 1980s. It’s also a music genre, which helped start the movement in the mid 2000s, and it has gained mainstream traction through soundtracks and TV shows. Something I’ve just realised. Nearly every recent decade has a version of futurism but I can’t think of current examples (that aren’t incredibly dystopian). Our collective version of the future is bleak for the first time pretty much ever.

As a teen at the time, many of these images were viewed as depicting our (80s) present, not visions of the future. They showed how we saw the current period, which we thought was ultramodern and advanced.
