@karly.latham: One of the things narcissistic abuse can teach you is to anticipate danger. You learn to read someone’s tone, study their facial expressions, notice every shift in their mood, and rehearse what you’re going to say before you say it. You learn which subjects to avoid, which feelings to hide, and how to make yourself as difficult to be angry with as possible. Because sometimes, knowing what mood someone was in could change how the rest of your day went. And then you leave. But you might still find yourself explaining every decision, panicking when someone is disappointed, or assuming that a small mistake is about to become a much bigger problem. You’re not necessarily reacting only to what’s happening now. Sometimes, you’re also reacting to what you’ve learned could happen next. The hard part isn’t to convince yourself that nobody will ever hurt you again, it’s learning to recognize when an old survival rule is making today’s decisions for you.
