Indonesia has defended its gas export cuts, saying existing contracts have not been breached. Singapore has emphasised that contractual commitments must be honoured. My view? These public exchanges are becoming less helpful. Both countries have legitimate interests to protect, and the contractual questions need to be addressed properly. Behind closed doors, officials and commercial parties should work through the facts, resolve their differences and preserve this important relationship. Public sparring risks making a workable solution harder. But beyond this dispute, there is potentially GAME-CHANGING news: Singapore could have a substantial source of energy beneath our feet. A preliminary survey estimates that Singapore’s geothermal resources have technical potential equivalent to more than 60 times our current annual electricity consumption. Could underground heat eventually provide dependable, locally sourced power—and reduce our exposure to imported fuel? Before we celebrate “60 years of electricity”, we need to understand what that headline actually means. Finding heat is one thing. Extracting it safely, consistently and affordably is another.
