@laexplained: A prehistoric monster, a Hollywood starlet with a new name, and a black lagoon. Just another day in LA! 🌴🎬🐸 Before you knew the Gill-Man as a Halloween favorite, he was a man in a monster suit posing beside Julie Adams on a Southern California studio backlot. These color publicity photographs by LIFE photographer Edward Clark offer a look at Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954): classic Hollywood horror in broad daylight, with a little movie magic hiding in plain sight. 👀 The story takes us deep into the Amazon, where a scientific expedition encounters a prehistoric creature. But making that remote jungle adventure required a different itinerary. Universal’s backlot in Universal City supplied California settings, including its Park Lake and Black Lagoon. Underwater scenes were filmed across the country at Wakulla Springs, Florida. On screen, the locations became one mysterious world. That’s one of my favorite things about Los Angeles film history: a place that looks impossibly far away can turn out to be a studio pond just over the hill. 🌴 And the monster? He required TWO performers. Ben Chapman played the Creature on land. Ricou Browning, an accomplished swimmer and underwater performer, handled the submerged sequences. Browning brought the swimming ability + breath control needed to move through those scenes in costume, giving the Gill-Man an eerie grace beneath the surface. Two performers, two states, one very memorable monster. Directed by Jack Arnold and released in black-and-white 3-D, the film helped turn a rubber-suited creature into one of the enduring faces of Universal horror. The underwater photography remains a big part of its appeal: beautiful, unsettling + strangely dreamlike. But the black-and-white movie concealed a detail these photographs reveal: Adams’s reddish hair. That color was a studio decision. She later told columnist Lydia Lane: “That was the studio’s idea but it was so wrong for me.” They’d changed her name, too. Born Betty May Adams, she became “Julia” at Universal before getting permission to switch to Julie. Imagine needing approval to change your own name by one letter. Old Hollywood really did have notes on everything. ✍️ Beyond the monster makeup and publicity poses, these images offer a glimpse of the studio system at work: a performer’s appearance, screen name + public image were all part of the production. Adams played Kay Lawrence, the expedition’s female scientist, but her career stretched far beyond the lagoon. She worked for decades in film + television, including a personal favorite, Murder, She Wrote, where she played real estate agent Eve Simpson. From an aquatic monster to Cabot Cove. Honestly, neither seems like the safest neighborhood. 😂 Creature from the Black Lagoon also spawned two sequels: Revenge of the Creature (1955) + The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). Browning returned for the underwater work, then helped create Flipper. Quite the aquatic career pivot. 🎣 Chapman became a familiar face to monster fans at conventions, while the Gill-Man took his place alongside Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster + the other icons of Universal’s classic monster movies. What I love about these photos is the contrast: the Creature looks ready to terrorize an expedition, while Adams looks ready for her next publicity appointment. The nightmare and the workday exist in the same frame. More than 70 years later, a woman in a white swimsuit + a creature from the depths remain instantly recognizable. Hollywood could change her hair and her name—but a trip to the lagoon made her unforgettable. Swipe through for a closer look at this little piece of vintage Hollywood. Have you seen the original film, or do you know the Creature mostly through his pop-culture afterlife? 👇 📸 All photos: Edward Clark / LIFE Photo Collection #LosAngelesHistory #OldHollywood #CreatureFromTheBlackLagoon #UniversalMonsters #LAExplained
