Salvadorian Heartbreaker 😻 :
Octopuses are some of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean, despite being invertebrates (animals without a backbone). They have three hearts: two pump blood to the gills, while the third pumps it to the rest of the body. Interestingly, when an octopus swims, the heart that delivers blood to the body actually stops beating, which is why swimming is exhausting for them and they prefer crawling along the ocean floor.
Even more fascinating is their nervous system — about two-thirds of an octopus’s neurons are located in its arms, not its brain. This means each arm can act almost independently, tasting and exploring its surroundings on its own. Some experiments have even shown that an octopus arm can continue to respond to stimuli for a short time after being detached.
On top of that, octopuses are masters of disguise. They can change both the color and texture of their skin in a fraction of a second to blend into their surroundings, avoid predators, or communicate with other octopuses. Some species can even mimic other animals, like lionfish or sea snakes, to scare off threats.
Basically, they’re like the aliens of the ocean — highly intelligent, flexible, and completely unlike most other animals on Earth. 🐙
