The Atlanta Dream just took Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. Atlanta defeated Golden State 97–71, taking a 2–1 lead in the WNBA Finals. Rhyne Howard recorded five steals after six in Game 2. Her anticipation and ability to disrupt passing lanes continue to create valuable scoring opportunities for Atlanta. Angel Reese added 21 points and 12 rebounds, continuing her impressive and record-breaking Finals run. But let’s talk about what Golden State did well, because those numbers matter too. The Valkyries’ bench contributed 26 of their 40 first-half points. That’s 65% of their offense. Janelle Salaün scored 11 first-half points, including three three-pointers, after going scoreless in the first two Finals games. And Cecilia Zandalasini’s perimeter shooting was another important part of Golden State’s offense. She made two first-half three-pointers and continued contributing from beyond the arc as the Valkyries fought their way back into the game. Golden State shot 57.1% from the field in the second quarter, compared with 27.8% in the first. They then opened the second half with a 9–3 run and eventually tied the game 48–48. That’s evidence of a team capable of making adjustments. But Atlanta responded, outscoring Golden State 51–31 in the second half. The Dream improved from approximately 34% shooting in Game 2 to 49.3% in Game 3, while Golden State finished at 34.8%. Golden State also reduced its turnovers from 19 in Game 2 to 15 in Game 3. Progress, yes, but Atlanta still converted those giveaways into 22 points. So the question isn’t whether Golden State can compete. We saw them do it. The question is whether they can sustain that production for four quarters. And remember, the 2017 Minnesota Lynx overcame a 2–1 Finals deficit to win the championship. Different Finals format, but an important reminder that this series isn’t over. My original model favored Golden State, but as I’ve said before and will say again: probability is not destiny. Only the Dream and the Valkyries will define the outcome. Let’s see what happens in Game 4. #WNBAFinals #AtlantaDream #GoldenStateValkyries
