@thescenenm: Nearly 20 years ago, one of the most powerful winter storms in Albuquerque’s recorded history buried the city under snow, shattered snowfall records and brought major travel disruptions across New Mexico. On December 29, 2006, Albuquerque International Sunport recorded 11.3 inches of snow in a single day, setting a record for the city’s snowiest calendar day. Another 5 inches fell the following day, bringing the two-day total to an astonishing 16.3 inches. While the official measurements were taken at the Sunport, snowfall totals varied significantly across the metro, with some Albuquerque locations reporting as much as 24 inches during the storm. The powerful, slow-moving winter system swept across New Mexico during the final days of December, producing widespread heavy snow and blizzard conditions in portions of the state. Interstate 40 between Albuquerque and Amarillo was closed, and numerous highways across eastern and northeastern New Mexico became impassable. The storm capped off an exceptionally snowy December for Albuquerque, which had already experienced another significant snowfall just days earlier. By the end of the month, the Sunport had recorded 20.8 inches of snow. Almost two decades later, the December 2006 storm remains one of the most memorable winter weather events in Albuquerque history. Were you living in Albuquerque during the 2006 snowstorm? Our property was buried in over 20 inches. It didn’t melt for weeks. We went out for an eerie late night walk . It was so bright at midnight. So quiet and just beautiful.

This happened when I was 16. It was so bad that Walmart shut down, but the Carls Jr I worked at insisted that we come in to work. It was the most glorious, easiest 8 hours of pay of my life. We made snowmen, played in the snow, drank coffee all day, and revelled in a clean store because we didn't have a single customer.

I remember this storm so vividly!! Shut down the whole city for days. I sat at an intersection in my car and just watched people skidding and sliding and spinning in the middle of the intersection bc they had no clue how to drive in that kind of snow 😂 and for whatever reason my then husband decided it was a good time to get a new truck. Went to the car lot and got it… spent the next 4 days driving around and helping those people that were stuck just for fun. We have had nothing near that storm since then

We had 18 inches at our house. School was closed for an extra week after Xmas break, teachers and principals were shoveling parking lots and sidewalks. Otherwise it would have been longer because streets, hospitals and other things were more important to plow. Limited number of plows and salt trucks. This is an every 40 to 50 year storm. We cannot afford to keep that amount of equipment that goes unused 98% of the time. It sure was beautiful, tho. Snow usually melts within a day or two here. But this storm was followed by a cold front and the snow stayed for 2+ weeks. A perfect storm, if you will.

I was trying to fly out to Las Vegas Nevada from support. Delay after delay. Never made it out. Waited for a cab to take me home… 3 hours after I got in the cab I made it. That was a wild storm. I loved it though.
