THREATS TO INVESTIGATORS RAISED AS JOE SIBANYONI’S R2.2M EXTORTION CASE IS POSTPONED AGAIN. The State has told the Delmas Magistrate’s Court that investigators in the alleged R2.2 million extortion and money-laundering case involving Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni have been receiving threats, as proceedings were postponed to April 20 for further investigations on Tuesday. Sibanyoni appeared alongside Oupa “Bafana” Sindane, Daniel Masilela and Philemon Msiza. The prosecution stressed that the threats raised in court were not being attributed to any of the four accused, while defence teams distanced their clients from the matter. The State requested more time to investigate the case, prompting renewed concerns from the defence over delays in bringing the matter forward. Sibanyoni’s lawyer, Advocate Shaun Abrahams, asked that the postponement be treated as final for further investigations. The court ordered that the case docket be disclosed in April. The four are accused of allegedly demanding more than R2.2 million in protection fees from businessman Tengane Thomas Ntuli in connection with a road-construction project in Mpumalanga. The allegations include claims that the project would be disrupted if payments were not made. The case has previously been delayed by disputes over the State’s charge sheet, further particulars and disclosure of the police docket. At an earlier appearance, the defence complained that it had not received the final charge sheet and argued that delays were affecting the accused’s ability to prepare their defence. The accused remain out on bail of R70,000 each. Their bail reporting conditions were relaxed at Tuesday’s appearance, with the four now required to report to a police station once a month instead of every second week. The case has also drawn attention amid evidence and allegations aired at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where Sibanyoni’s name has featured in testimony concerning alleged criminal networks. Those allegations are separate from the charges being dealt with in the Delmas court.
