If you are planning your first cruise ship holiday, there are several important things to consider before booking. A cruise can be convenient because accommodation, meals and entertainment are bundled together, but costs, documentation, health requirements and shore excursions can vary considerably. 1. Choose the right cruise itinerary Consider: Destinations: Mediterranean, Caribbean, Middle East, Indian Ocean, Alaska, etc. Trip length: Short 3–5 night cruises versus longer 7–14+ night journeys. Ports of call: Check how much time the ship actually spends at each destination. Sea days: Some itineraries have several full days at sea. 2. Check your travel documents Before paying, confirm: Passport validity requirements Visa requirements for every country/port on the itinerary Transit visas, where applicable Cruise-line documentation requirements Return/onward-ticket requirements For an international cruise, don't assume that having a visa for the country where you board means you can enter every destination on the itinerary. 3. Calculate the real cost The advertised cruise fare may not be the final amount. Budget for: Cruise fare Flights to and from the departure port Hotel before the cruise Port taxes and fees Gratuities/service charges Shore excursions Internet/Wi-Fi Specialty restaurants Alcohol and some drinks Spa treatments Laundry Travel insurance Airport and port transfers Tip: Arriving at the departure city at least one day before sailing can reduce the risk of missing the ship because of flight delays. 4. Select your cabin carefully Your choice can significantly affect the experience. Inside cabin: Usually cheapest, but no window. Ocean-view: Window but generally no private outdoor space. Balcony: More expensive but excellent for enjoying the sea privately. Suite: More space and often additional benefits. If you are sensitive to movement, consider a cabin near the middle of the ship and on a lower deck, where motion is generally less noticeable. 5. Understand the food and drinks package Check exactly what is included. Some cruises include: Main dining rooms Buffet Basic beverages Coffee/tea Selected snacks Specialty restaurants, premium coffee, bottled water, soft drinks or alcoholic beverages may cost extra. 6. Plan your shore excursions Don't wait until you arrive at every port. Research: What attractions are close to the port How long transportation takes Whether independent tours are safe and practical Excursion prices The ship's departure time Very important: If you explore independently, leave enough time to return. The ship generally will not wait for late passengers who are not on a ship-organized excursion. 7. Buy travel insurance Cruise-specific travel insurance can be particularly useful because it may cover situations such as: Medical emergencies Trip cancellation Missed connections Lost luggage Delayed flights Emergency evacuation Check the policy carefully rather than assuming ordinary travel insurance covers everything. 8. Consider seasickness Even large modern ships can move in rough seas. If you're prone to motion sickness: Choose a central, lower-deck cabin. Take appropriate medication after checking with a pharmacist/doctor. Spend time outdoors and look toward the horizon if you feel uncomfortable. Avoid excessive alcohol if you're feeling nauseated. 9. Check the cruise line's rules Before travelling, find out about: Luggage limits Dress codes Formal nights Bringing food onboard Alcohol restrictions Smoking areas Children/minimum-age policies Mobility assistance Swimming-pool rules Bringing medication Check-in and boarding deadlines 10. Pack strategically Useful items can include: Passport and travel documents Copies/digital backups of important documents Comfortable walking shoes Swimwear Light jacket Formal/semi-formal outfit if required Sunscreen Prescription medication Motion-sickness medication Portable charger Small day bag Reusable water bottle Appropriate clothing for different destinations Avoid packing prohibited
