@piney.explorers: Have you ever had coffee in a building that was already standing when Hessian soldiers marched into town? The brick house at 14 White Street in Mount Holly was built by Michael Earnest around 1775, just before the American Revolution. Very little is known about Earnest himself, but his house has been part of some major history. Back then this was Race Street, in the oldest part of town, near the mills along the Rancocas Creek, and the house sits right next to the Thomas Budd House from 1744. In December 1776, Hessian troops poured into Mount Holly during the Battle of Iron Works Hill. That fight kept thousands of enemy soldiers busy while Washington got ready to cross the Delaware and surprise Trenton. Less than two years later, in June 1778, the British army under General Henry Clinton came through town on its way to the Battle of Monmouth. Through all of that, this house stood right here. Today the old Earnest House is the Colonial Cafe, a cozy spot in Mill Race Village. We stopped in for a cup of coffee and it was really delicious. Drinking it inside walls that have stood for about 250 years made it even better. If you’re in Mount Holly, put it on your list. #newjersey #History #america250 #burlingtoncountynj #fyp

So many places to feature in Mt. Holly!
I was a regular at Kitchen87 before they closed their doors in August 2025.
Walked by Colonial Cafe so many times! Will definitely stop in soon.
