1956 TV Remote Worked Without Batteries, Electronics or Infrared 📺🔔 Long before modern infrared remotes, Zenith created a wireless television controller that worked using sound. The 1956 Space Command remote contained small mechanical hammers and aluminium rods. Pressing a button struck one of the rods, producing a high-frequency ultrasonic tone that the television could detect even though most people couldn’t hear it. Different rods produced different frequencies, allowing the remote to control functions such as changing channels, adjusting sound and switching the television on or off. The system was developed under engineer Robert Adler and solved a major problem with earlier light-based remotes, which could sometimes be triggered accidentally by sunlight or other bright sources. It’s a brilliant piece of mid-century engineering: no batteries, no circuit board and no radio signal — just a tiny mechanical “chime” communicating with the television.
