@ms_tego: Luxury Stores Looted Across France as Prot€sts Turn V!ol€nt Luxury boutiques and other businesses were targeted during widespread unr€st across France on Saturday, October 17, as demonstrations over rising living costs and deteriorating public services escalated into l00ting, v@nd@lism and cl@shes with police. Stores and brands reportedly targeted included: Paris: Céline, Kenzo, Salomon and Arc’teryx boutiques were among the shops whose windows were smashed or merchandise taken, according to Le Monde. Lyon: Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Sephora and The Kooples were among the businesses reportedly hit during looting in the city centre. Marseille: An Hermès boutique was among the stores reportedly looted. Other cities: Shops were also looted in Nice, Lille and other locations, with an Apple Store in Lille reportedly stripped of merchandise. The full financial damage to retailers and the final tally of looted businesses had not yet been established in the reports reviewed. Reason for the unrest: Demonstrations across France were fuelled by anger over the rising cost of living, economic inequality and deteriorating public services, particularly concerns about schools and education. While many protests were peaceful, some groups resorted to looting, vandalism and clashes with police. Government response: President Emmanuel Macron called for calm and respect for people and property. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu reported that 1,200 people had been arrested and 150 police officers injured by late Saturday as authorities responded to the violence.
