💻Facts and figures: - The 180,000 Americans leaving figure is a significant undercount drawn from a partial sample of 15 countries with available 2025 data. - 4-9M Americans are already living outside of the US: - The net negative migration of ~150,000 is measure of all flows in and out. - The outflow was: 675,000 deportations and 2.2 million self-deportations in 2025, meaning the total number of people leaving the U.S. far exceeds the 180,000 citizens who relocated voluntarily. - In-migration fell from a peak of 6 million in 2023 to 2.6–2.7 million in 2025 - Americans wanting to leave doubled from 1 in 10 during the 2008 recession to 1 in 5 in 2024 (Source: Gallup) My thoughts: - Unlike 1935, today’s emigrants are not fleeing poverty. They are educated, skilled and can still be earning U.S. salaries. This is what’s called a “brain drain” and will affect our economic growth in the long term. - The affordability drawing Americans to Europe is simply relative wealth (what feels cheap to someone earning dollars is unattainable to a local earning a European wage). This is already been damaging to locals with Lisbon home prices doubling in five years and Americans accounting for 58% of foreign buyers in Portugal. - The net migration figure of -150K is certainly not accurate, mostly because the USA does not track citizen departures and there is no deregistration. - We also are not accounting for Americans living abroad full time while still maintaining US addresses. I feel like this is a crisis in confidence: in American healthcare, housing, safety and governance and the people with the most options are “voting” to leave first. #usa #europe
