the seven kingdoms, despite geographically based on the seven kingdoms of England, all have an actual real world cultural counter-part. For example; The Reach is France, Dorne is Spain/Palestine, the North is Scotland/Northern England. The Targaryens and Valyria are based on the Romans and the Roman Empire.
