Protesters forced their way into Marseille’s City Hall, while a fire caused extensive damage to the historic City Hall in Limoges. The demonstrations began with students protesting teacher shortages and poor school conditions. They grew as labor unions and others joined to demand lower living costs, higher wages and better public services. France’s Interior Ministry counted about 550,000 people at 110 marches; organizers estimated 800,000. Most demonstrators marched peacefully, but the scale of the destruction was significant. By Saturday evening, the prime minister said about 1,200 people had been arrested and more than 150 police officers injured. Posted for journalistic purposes.
