🇱🇦🇺🇸 | The Lao Secret War (1961–1975) was a massive, covert military operation conducted by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Laos during the wider Vietnam War. While the world's attention was fixed on neighboring Vietnam, the U.S. unleashed a devastating aerial campaign, dropping over 2 million tons of ordnance on Laos. This equivalent of a planeload of bombs every 8 minutes, 24 hours a day, for 9 years, made Laos the most heavily bombed country in history per capita. On the ground, because U.S. troops could not openly deploy, the CIA recruited, funded, and trained a "Secret Army" of roughly 30,000 indigenous Hmong guerrillas, led by General Vang Pao, to fight communist forces. ------------------------------ ## Why Was It Kept Secret? The war was kept completely hidden from the American public, Congress, and the media for two primary diplomatic and political reasons: ## 1. Violating the Geneva Accords In 1962, the U.S., North Vietnam, and 12 other nations signed the International Agreement on the Neutrality of Laos. This treaty explicitly forbade foreign militaries from entering Laos or establishing bases there. Both the U.S. and North Vietnam immediately violated this treaty but wanted to maintain a public facade of compliance to avoid an international diplomatic crisis or a direct military clash between global superpowers (the U.S. and the Soviet Union). ## 2. Cutting Off the Ho Chi Minh Trail North Vietnam was using a network of supply routes passing through southeastern Laos—known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail—to funnel weapons and troops into South Vietnam. The U.S. military felt it was imperative to destroy this pipeline. To bypass treaty restrictions, the operation was handed over to the CIA. ## How the Secrecy Was Maintained * Civilian Fronts: The CIA used a dummy commercial airline called Air America to transport weapons, supplies, and troops under the guise of humanitarian aid. * Stripped Identities: American military pilots were required to officially resign or "ghost" from the military, reclassifying themselves as civilian pilots. They flew planes with no U.S. military markings. * Coded Language: In official Washington communications, the word "Laos" was strictly banned. The country was referred to code-namingly as "The Other Theatre" and its main operations base, Long Tieng, was called "Alternate". The secrecy was so effective that the U.S. public only learned of the massive atrocities and bombing campaigns when the Pentagon Papers were leaked in 1971, followed by subsequent congressional hearings. Today, the tragic legacy lives on, as an estimated 80 million unexploded cluster bomblets remain scattered across the Lao countryside, continuing to cause civilian casualties. #laos #secretwar #edit #unitedstates #war #History #fyp #coldwar #larp
