@madamboscha: Our observation We have seen people making fun of Babili Mansa’s promise to end electricity and water shortages if his candidate, Almameh Gibba, wins the presidential election. Some are even asking why he didn’t do it when he was president. The truth is that many of those asking these questions are young people who were either not born or too young to remember what life was like before Jammeh came to power. Before Jammeh’s presidency, very few households had access to electricity. Even those fortunate enough to be connected suffered from persistently low voltage. Sometimes, even watching television at night was a challenge. It was Jammeh who significantly improved electricity supply and expanded access to communities that had never imagined they would have electricity in their homes. In those days, if you applied for an electricity connection, NAWEC would ask you to provide your own poles. It was during Jammeh’s presidency that this practice came to an end. People are free to criticise Jammeh and question his promises, but it is also important to remember history and acknowledge the changes that took place during his time in office.
