It's true. When I was Ibadi, imams would usually discourage me and my family to study the Quran outside of their spectrum. We were never free to actually think about our Faith in a way that was constructive. Years later I left Islam. And yes more than 1 Quran exists. You can buy different Qurans in Arabic in the UAE (Where I lived for a while) and Saudi. They are not variants, they actually say completely different things.

So this point is not true, it’s not 1950s anymore. We have rigorous scholarship on Quranic manuscripts by secular scholars, on Hadith and ICMA by secular scholars, on the historical external evidence towards early Islam by secular scholars, archeology by secular scholars. This is just an old myth by Christians. The thing that has changed in the last 30-40 years is that scholars let go of the Islamic traditional Hadith narrative and went to look with a historical critical method instead. And the whole of Quran is as stable as a ancient religious book can possible be. It’s bulletproof in the manuscript attestation. There is no other story we can find in the manuscripts. Unfortunately not true for the bible, we have apocryphal text, we have missing narratives and stories, we have developed theology, we have anachronism and interpolation etc etc. So you can’t compare unfortunately.
