Supporting and loving someone does not equate to supporting and loving their actions. It doesn’t require you to pick or choose. Being loyal to someone simply mean supporting them as they deal with the consequences of the choices they’ve made. Both good and bad.

Asking me to protect him at the cost of putting me in jeopardy isn’t loyalty to me. To me, what’s ‘right’ is simply being true to yourself - aka owning your own actions regardless of how they may look. The opposite of that is abandoning yourself, and only a man who abandons himself would ask the same of you - that you do something for him at your expense. Any love that comes at the risk of one’s conscience isn’t worth it.

Id rather my spouse be loyal to whats right because, like all humans, sometimes I can be wrong without realizing and I want a partner who is willing to check my shit and keep me accountable. To me, holding eachother accountable to whats right IS loyalty to one another, making excuses for their behavior is disloyal to their character. All that being said, how I would hold my partner accountable REALLY depends on what they did and who it impacted. Maybe it would be public, maybe it would be private, but I definitely wouldnt just go along with it.

legally you have the right to stand by your spouse and not say anything that woupd convict them. so the law is absolutely on the side of loyalty to your spouse. I think otherwise a relationship will struggle
